OPEN CALL: Are You Interested in Telling ‘The Real Stories of Orange County’?

By Barbara Neal Varma //

Hi guys,

DeAnna has kindly handed me the microphone to propose a new column idea for O.C. Writers:

The Real Stories of Orange County

As told by O.C. Writers

I’m thinking nonfiction slice-of-life essays, 500-700 words, about O.C. living. The good, the bad, the magical. First times, last times. Wishes that came true… those that didn’t, like that. The only requirement is it has to have an O.C. tie-in.

Everyone would get the chance to submit one or more essays for the column. If selected, you’d get both a writing credit to add to your fame, and a bio blurb at the end of the column to promote your books or latest tattoos, up to you.

But first, is this of interest to y’all? Post your questions and comments here or reach out directly to me: Barbara@BarbaraNealVarma.com

  1. Hi everyone,
Many thanks to those who have indicated an interest in “The Real Stories of Orange County” monthly column. I don’t have all the party rules put together yet–beyond a 500-700 nonfiction story about living in Orange County—but I should have something cobbled together by early next week. Meanwhile, you’re welcome to email me (barbara@barbaranealvarma.com) to add your name to my distribution list. Stay safe and stay tuned!

    1. Hi Marilyn, these will be first person personal essays–but that still leaves an opportunity for talking about some O.C. history. Something like, “I recent trip to the Bowers Museum sparked my curiosity about …” Or “I’ve always been interested in how Orange County … ” Or “My family’s and Orange County histories converged when … ” So, it’s an historical account as told by you and from our point of view. Hope that helps! If you’re still interested, please send me your email to receive updates. 🙂

      1. Thank you. Will have to figure out a clever present-time, personal approach to share some of the historical data I’ve collected researching for my novel. Neat challenge!
